The 2022 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge 'Clos du Roy' is a highly regarded Pinot Noir from one of the best vineyards in Marsannay. The Clos du Roy vineyard, located at an elevation of 270 meters with a moderate east-southeast-facing slope, is planted with vines dating back to 1952. The terroir consists of gravelly, iron-rich soil, and the vineyard is farmed using certified organic and biodynamic practices. The wine is made using 100% whole-cluster pressing, indigenous yeast fermentation, and is aged for 18 months in barrel, followed by blending and settling in stainless steel tanks with minimal sulfur added at bottling. The 2022 vintage is marked by a well-defined bouquet with aromas of black cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of inkwell and brine. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, taut freshness, and an elegant finish. It has been praised for its precision, balance, and potential for aging, with tasting notes suggesting that it will become even more spectacular over time, with an ideal drinking window from 2028 to 2034. The wine’s complexity and structure, along with its captivating red berry fruit and mineral undertones, make it a standout expression of Marsannay, showcasing Sylvain Pataille’s exceptional winemaking skills.
